Whoop's AI Coach draws complaints of invented data, while tests find its sensors hold up
Users of Whoop's AI Coach have reported the chatbot citing features and data that don't exist, and one longtime reviewer calls its training advice generic. Independent tests of the band's heart-rate sensor are more positive, and the FDA closed its warning letter over Whoop's blood pressure feature in June.

Whoop, the Boston-based maker of a screenless fitness band, has made AI a central part of its app through WHOOP Coach, a chatbot that answers questions using a member's heart rate, sleep and recovery data. Published user reports and reviews describe a feature that is useful for some questions but prone to confident errors.
Users report made-up answers
In a January 19, 2026 post on Whoop's official community forum titled "AI Hallucinations," a member wrote that Coach gave detailed instructions for app options "that did not exist," then admitted it had assumed the features from "patterns in other fitness apps." The member asked Whoop to add guardrails so the AI does not reference unsupported features (WHOOP Community).
A Whoop representative replied that the behavior "isn't the experience we want," said Coach responses are not flagged automatically in real time but that the company audits them and shares reports with its teams "to help improve accuracy," and added that Whoop "can't promise timelines or outcomes" (WHOOP Community).
Reviewers: helpful on data, generic on training
Lukáš Beran, who has written about Whoop for more than two years at Můj Whoop, wrote on July 7, 2026 that Coach handles data questions well, such as monthly HRV averages, but that its training advice is generic. He said it once told him his HRV was "above average for my age group" without naming a dataset he could check, and concluded he "wouldn't buy WHOOP just for the chatbot" (Můj Whoop).
Not every review is negative. A reviewer writing for Yahoo Tech said Whoop's coach was "the closest thing to an actual coach" they had tested, praising workouts tailored to recovery. The same reviewer noted a limit: when they hiked carrying a 40-pound child, the strain score did not reflect the effort and the coach could not correct it (Yahoo Tech).
The sensor data underneath
Tests of the hardware feeding the AI are more favorable. PCMag found the Whoop MG fixed the "inconsistent and sometimes inaccurate" heart-rate results it saw with Whoop 4.0, though early in a run readings deviated from an Apple Watch Ultra 2 by as much as 5 to 10 beats per minute before settling within 2 to 5 (PCMag). The5krunner reported that after a July 6, 2026 heart-rate algorithm update, Whoop MG worn on the biceps showed a bias of +1.0 bpm against a Fitbit reference across 846 running samples (the5krunner).
A review of the published research by WeGuide found Whoop's nighttime heart rate well supported, HRV and respiratory rate good, sleep-stage detection weak, and blood pressure, SpO2 and skin temperature without independent Whoop-specific validation. It added that nearly all published data cover older Whoop 2.0 and 4.0 models (WeGuide).
Regulatory history
In July 2025 the FDA sent Whoop a warning letter saying its Blood Pressure Insights feature was an unauthorized medical device (FDA). Whoop said at the time that the agency was "overstepping its authority" (CNBC). On June 24, 2026, MDDI reported that the FDA had closed the letter after Whoop changed the feature and its labeling, noting the agency said its decision applied only to the modified feature. Whoop founder Will Ahmed called it "a positive outcome for Americans and for consumer wellness innovation" (MDDI).
